Did you know...
I am an inventor?
I invented the
Spiral Eye side threading sewing needle? It has a small opening
on the side of the eye, making it simple to thread and it stays
threaded.
It won five awards at the MN inventors Congress in 2008 and just
won New Product Innovation Show
Case Award at the Craft and Hobby Association Craft show in
Anaheim, CA in January 2009.
I have been featured on ABC NightLine and several metro area
news stations, local papers and magazines.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppies generally
start out very dark, looking like little brown teddy bears or
"Ewoks" and as the hair grows out the hair closes to their
skin comes in almost white.
As you start cutting the hair off it almost seems like you
are dying the hair lighter, but all you are doing is cutting
the darker ends off.
By 9 months to a year they will appear to be a white dog.
Then their classic wheaten color comes in and darkens
as they age. See the page The first year to learn more.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers
don't shed and are considered Hypoallergenic.
Unlike many breeds, Wheatens also don't have a "doggy
smell". They are not yappy, but will bark in a quiet, mellow
voice to let you know company has arrived. Being calmer
and more eager to please, they behave more like a Labrador
Retriever or a Cocker Spaniel than like a terrier.
If allowed, a typical "Wheaten welcome" includes lots of
jumping up and down, tail wagging, and kisses. No dog is
happier to see someone than a Wheaten.
A Wheaten will follow you around the house, rest
under a desk at your feet, and cuddle with you on the couch.
Fetch isn't natural to them like it is to a retriever. They love
to chase a ball. It's the bringing the prize back to you they
seem to find of no value. Make friends with someone with a
retriever so their dog can explain the game to your
Wheaten. Learning from observing other dogs is a strength
for this breed.
Wheatens like to run. If you want a roller blade partner,
they'll be your best friend. Jumping over obstacles as they
run gives them sheer joy, so make sure to find a log or short
wall along the way.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers can have
one of two kinds of coats.
The Irish coat (above left) is silkier and has more shine to it.
The American coat (above right) is thicker and has less wave
to it.
The Irish coat takes a few years to look its best, but it has
less matting problems.
Some breeders believe there are behavior traits associated
with the hair type. My own experience agrees.
My Irish coated dog, Maggie, acts more like a Terrier. She is
feisty and has a more stubborn personality, but she is very
loving and smart.
Elmo and Pebbles, my American coated dogs have calmer,
more laid back dispositions.
But, Elmo and Pebbles have AKC papers and a long genetic
line I can follow.
Maggie, while is a purebred, I don't have the papers so I don't
know if the personality is just the way she is, or if it tied to her
genetic history.

Grooming:
Don't believe everything you read.
If you want to keep your Wheaten in a show coat, with long hair on his legs, a distinguished beard
and that fall thing that resembles overgrown bangs over his eyes, yes, it takes a lot of work.
Most pet owners choose to keep the hair trimmed shorter. Not only is it easier to keep from
matting, it's cleaner and some think it feels softer.
You can cut it yourself or take him to a groomer every 3 months or so.

Elmo being sneaky

My favorite Elmo story.
When one of my pups, Piglet, was at the stage where she ran away when I called her, Maggie or Pebbles would go
and nudge the pup and run to me. Piglet would cheerfully follow back to me. That worked a few times, but Piglet
wasn't persuaded for long. Soon I was back to having to chase Piglet down to get her in the house, no matter how
cold it was outside
One time, while I was grumbling and putting on boots to go outside and get Piglet, Elmo playfully grabbed a favorite
stuffed animal and brought it out to Piglet. Great, now I was going to have two dogs playing in the rainy cold night.
Elmo teased and waved the toy at Piglet until she started to play tug of war. Then Elmo glanced over to me at the
doorstep and gave the toy an extra shake, ensuring the puppy had a good grip on the toy. He then dragged her
back toward me. I could see Piglet realized what he was doing, and she balked, but was unwilling to let go of the
toy. He dragged her all the way to the door.
Once inside, Elmo let go of the toy, looked at me as if to say, "there you go." Gave his wet coat a quick shake and
trotted off to his favorite chair.

Piglet, at around 8 weeks of age
These are all puppies who had Elmo as their father. Not all from the same litter, but you can see how beautiful they all turned out.
