Five days old
xray, x-ray of pregnant dog
Look
carefully

and you can
see the
outline of
the heads.

There are
nine
puppies in
the womb.

You may
find the
close-up
x-ray easier
to see them.
At a month, they are
active, playful and getting
teeth. They may start
eating puppy food, but
mother's milk is still the
key food in their diet.

Their eyes are still blue,
but not for long. Soon,
they will have beautiful
brown eyes.

Eight days
old, even
without
their eyes
open, they
some how
find each
other and
pile up to
sleep.

may seem ready
to go to a new
home, but they
still need time
with their mom.

They also have a
lot to learn yet
about being a
dog. Things like:
how to fetch, and
play tug, and
how to steal
Dad's toy, and
how to shake
after a bath.
They also learn
where they fit
into the pack.

they also nurse everyday.

By 12 weeks
their coat is
changing from
brown with a
black face to a
white color all
over. The white
color then starts
to get cream
and golden. By
two years old,
they will get the
classic wheaten
color.

The first year

At birth, pups weigh around 6-10 oz.  A typical litter will have 5-9 puppies.

From the beginning, the pups squirm and search blindly, climbing on each
other for warmth. Because they cannot maintain their own body
temperature, it is very important the mother use her body to keep them
warm.

Dew claws are removed and tails are docked at 2 or 3 days of age.
The umbilical cord falls off by day four.
Their eyes open around 10-14 days.
